Off-grid Power in Quartzsite

Life — all three months that I plan to be out here — in Quartzsite is a lot different from life in the “real world”.

I’m not really sure what the term self-sufficient means to most people.

In fairness, this isn’t like living on the open prairie in the 1800s. (Though try to overlook my clothes, because I certainly look like I should be prospecting for gold in the 1840s.) I mean I don’t have to build my own home and I didn’t arrive by horse-drawn covered wagon.

However I do have to generate all my own power, carry all my own water, and store my own waste. I’d say that I was 100% off-grid, but I do have cell phone and internet service. So it’s a decidedly 21st century style of roughing it.

Let me introduce you to the desert outside of Quartzsite and show you how I produce my own electricity for living.

Coming up, I want to show some of the more interesting DIY camping setups I’ve come across out here in the desert.
