I’ve mentioned before that Quito, Ecuador lies in a mountain valley deep in the Andes Mountains.

The city is surrounded on all four sides by mountains.

In fact, it’s only a little over four miles wide at its widest point and about 20 miles long at its longest. In terms of elevation, Quito is the world’s second-highest capitol city, after La Paz, Bolivia.

Its colonial center is considered one of the best-preserved in the Americas and, along with Krakow, Poland, was named as  the world’s first UNESCO Heritage Site.

One of Quito’s suburbs lies right on the equator and the city proper comes within 1km of the equator. Making it the most equatorial national capitol in the world.
