This would NEVER be allowed in the US!
One of Quito, Ecuador’s biggest attractions, both literally and figuratively, is the massive Basilica del Voto Nacional (“Basilica of the National Vow”).
The towers are a full 377ft. above the ground and visitors can climb open-air ladders for only $2.00 to catch magnificent views over the surrounding city.
Basilica in Quito
This Catholic cathedral isn’t nearly as old as it looks. In fact, it was only complete enough to be opened to the public in the 1980s.
It’s a very popular destination for both tourists and locals so it’s best to go during the week if at all possible.
There is only one ladder to get up into the highest tower and it will only accommodate one person at a time. (The tower platform can accommodate around 30 people at once.) Since you use the same ladder to go both up and down, there can be lines of people waiting.
Unlike in the hyper safety-conscious U.S., there are very few safeguards to prevent someone from falling. Personal accountability is a big thing in most other parts of the world. You should only go up into the tower if you are reasonably fit and not terrified of heights.
If you do go, you will be rewarded. The views are fantastic.
