Do I want to WHAT?!

I didn’t comment on an incident that happened when I bought a jacket to replace the one that had been stolen because I thought it was just a weird, one-off thing. But last night it just happened again.

When I went to pay by credit card, the card machine asked if I wanted to pay “con cuarto” or “sin cuarto”.

I didn’t understand what cuarto meant in this context so I had to ask. It took a bit of back and forth with the sales clerks but I finally figured out that it was asking if I wanted to pay in installments.

That seemed weird enough, given that I was paying by credit card and it was the card machine itself posing the question. Last night it happened again when I was buying a bus ticket.

Who buys a bus ticket and pays in installments?
